Are you facing online workplace harassment?

Do you work from home? Unlike working in an office building, you likely get to wear what you want, take breaks when you want and have little contact with your co-workers. It may be a luxury that you do not want to lose. However, your well-being may be compromised by online workplace harassment.

Online workplace harassment is a growing issue for employees who work from home. It can happen at any time and may not go away once you end your workday. Here are a few examples of online workplace harassment:

Is your personal information being used against you?

Your job likely has some of your personal information, such as where you live, your log-in information and bank account info. Your business must keep your information private for your safety. However, a co-worker or employer could use this information to harass you. As a result, you could receive death threats, bullying or sexual requests via email, instant message or workplace platforms.

Are you getting unsolicited pictures or videos?

You likely communicate with your co-workers and employer through emails, texts, phone calls and video calls. As a result, you could receive pictures or videos with sexual or derogatory undertones. You may not be able to immediately stop receiving these photos and videos, especially if they are coming directly from an employee or employer.

Is someone making aggressive comments on your posts?

You may have several social media accounts, which may also be required for your job. The posts you make on social media may be commented on by your co-workers. Some of these comments could be aggressive. You may feel uncomfortable by these comments — especially if they veer away from work and start to attack you personally in some way.

Handling online workplace harassment may be difficult to stop. Legal guidance can help you take steps to prevent and report online workplace harassment.
